What are some useful computer certifications?

I want to get an idea of the certifications a person can get by getting some books, learning material, taking test, getting certificate or something of the sort. Not something where you have to attend classes because I'd like to get some certifications at my own paces. Also, tell how long each takes and how important it is as well as what it's about.

Thats really vague.

Thats like asking: "I want to get an idea on the degrees a person can get by going to college, learning material, taking tests and getting a degree of some sort"

what branch of computing exactly ?

Preferably hardware side of things: that can include computer building, networking, anything

For software side, it would have to be using software, I'm still learning beyond webpage programming/design.

I think the A+ certification is good for computer hardware..
Microsoft Certs are good for everything from networking to software design/implementation
Cisco certs are good for networking but are difficult from what i have heard.

If you're just beginning web design and stuff all the certs mentioned above might be over your head at the moment.
You should just pick a software language like vb.net or c# and use ASP.NET and SQL Server 2000 to make spiffy little apps and get really good at it and see how that goes.. That's what i would do if i were you

I meant I'm pretty good with webpage design, but only now getting into desktop application design.

I'm going to get more information on A+ cert.
I'll be taking the Cisco certification course at my school when I'm a senior
How hard is the microsoft certification?
