heres the problem... societies indoctrinate (or at least attempt to) the people within them, so theres very little universal belief. sanctitiy of children, at least male ones, seems to be rather common, i don't know if its universal. the romans claimed the carthaginians sacrificed children... who knows how much of that is true and what was propaganda for their citizens.

actually, the biggest problem is that your discussion group there probably knows little about the vast majority of cultures so you couldn't possibly know what was universal...

Hah, you couldnt be farther from the truth on that one though... Im taking an international class here in Holland with all international students from france, spain, US, Canada, China, Japan, Macedonia, Greece, Italy, Netherlands, Finland, Germany, and quite a few others....

Depends on your definition of universal. If you are looking for 100% absolutes then I don't think you will find any. Since we are individuals there is always the possbility of someone going against the grain.

If you're looking for 'generally accepted' values then you can list things like "eating human flesh is wrong", etc.

In order for a society to prosper they must support procreation in some form or fashion, so you can say that hetero relationships are universally valued, but then again you've got that 1% of the population that wants to mess with the applying of a 'universal' label.

To find the most basic values look to human instinct - the need for food, shelter, procreation.
