I've been sick off and on now for three weeks, but it's never really been my throat until within the past week. Since Thursday night however, it's gotten progressively worse to the point where I could barely speak and now I can't speak at all. It hurts really bad when I swallow, and I also have a fever off and on. I can't even really string together more than 5 or 6 hours of sleep at a time. That one gland that's above the carotid artery is also really swollen.

I'm going to see a doctor later today I hope, but I'm just wondering if strep throat is a possibility.

Update: Went to the doc today, apparently it's not strep, but the mono tests showed up negative. She said her gut feeling is that it is mono, so she gave me some really weak antibiotics. Apparently antibiotics make mono worse so she just said take it and if a rash starts appearing, stop and if no change happens after a while, stop. So, no school for a week and no sports for six weeks... there goes baseball.
 
Is pneumonia really a possibility? My dad got viral pneumonia once and it took him months to feel back at 100%. The thing is, I can't afford months; right now I can't even really afford more than 2 days.

I've only seen commercials for it, never had a reason to go there. It's not exactly the first thing I would think of.

Anyway, reading up on some of the stuff, it looks like it could be bad news for me.

I've gotta wait til one of my parents wakes up. And since we got a new plan we have to choose a Kaiser doctor before I can do anything.
 
Gargle for about a minute with some strong mouth wash and/or warm salt water.

It isn't pleasant, but it's supposed to be effective. It made me feel a little better anyway.

yeah look at the back of your throat in a mirror and if there are little white dots you probably have it. Sounds like you had some other sicknesses and then cought strep throat as well.
 
strep usually isn't preceded by another illness for 2 weeks. still a strep swab is easy. you could have tonsillitis, mono, or any number of other illnesses.
 
glad you finally listened to your body.

fever is never good especially if it last for more than a few days. swollen lymph nodes are never good either (again, your body is telling you something like HEY!!! I'm busy fighting baddies here). Unable to swallow? Can't sleep?

let's hope this was a lesson.

And do be sure to stop any medicine if you have a rash, swelling or itching. The doctor is correct that antibiotics with MONO can bring on a hell of a rash. It did me, looked like I was exposed to gamma radition over 100% of my body. If you do get a rash, go to the doctor the next day.
