What are some signs of HD failure?

I just bought a new 400 gig SATA WD hard drive a month ago. I just tried to turn my pc in my sig on, and it was just stuck at a blank screen. I put my ear next to the HD, and it's making a sound like something is off balance, a weird vibrating sound. ( the HD is in a silencer, so usually it's dead quiet) Whenever it loads something, like TF2, it makes a LOUD sound too. I know it can't be vibration that's making all the noise, since it has rubber feet that screw onto the rails to secure it. Are these signs that it's failing? I had to reset the CMOS to get it to startup.

Awesome, thanks NXIL. Anyone recommend a program that can backup everything (including XP) onto a external HD and boot off of that temporarily while i send my drive off for repair?

1. they start running when they want, when you turn on the computer.

2. do some strange noises. HDD are well known for their particular sound... some of them are more noise than others.. but plz.. understand that a ROAR is not normal... and by the way they dont sound like a Roll Royce Turbine...

3. it runs slower than it should... you computer can get slower... computers get slower all the time.. you have to do a HDD benchmark to see if they are working fine...

4. missing data...

5. stop working compleatly... you dont each the internal disks engine running

6. you hear some strange sounds like someone is hitting a door if their finger tips, (dunno other comparison of the sound) actuator arm hitting from side to side... usually meand full dead of the drive...

7. some strange short and computer turn off.. or lot o smoke comes from drive...
