What kind of printer?

Monochrome? Color? Laser? Inkjet? Dye sub?

What do you need it to do?

Just FYI, wide format printers are not "cheap." They can be cheap relative to other wide format printers, but they're far more expensive than their letter/legal counterparts.

You might look at a HP Laserjet 5000 series printer, with the introduction of the 5100 the 5000's should be clearing out at pretty decent prices. It will do full bleed 11x17, 1200x1200 dpi. They're also extremely reliable. They are, however, $1200+ for the base model 5000 with only one cassette tray and no ethernet connection or duplexer.

Very nice printers, though. I know Epson used to have some pretty reasonably priced wide format Stylus printers, I dunno if they still have anything like that though.

You might also look at a Deskjet 1220cse, they're 1/3 the cost of the laser & should do pretty decent output. Unfortunately it's an inkjet. :(

I've got the 1220 (c). It's a few years old, but I highly recommend it as a mid-range inkjet. Very good output on all types of paper.

I picked up an HP wide format on eBay this spring for about $60!! I think it's a 1200C? It's about 5 years old.
Anyway, I printed tons of CAD stuff on it this spring and it works great aside from an occasional paper feeding glitch.

To bad it isn't well supported under Linux. My CAD program was windows only, so I had to corrupt my machine for awhile :(
But the printer won't see much use now that I'm done with that for awhile.

In any case. I'd watch eBay. There's always a few on there that you might get a deal on.

Plotters are a whole nother story. There ain't no such thing as a cheap plotter!
