What are some of the best song remakes, covers that bested, matched or somehow redefined the original?

A few I can think of are:

Santana's She's Not There (originally the Zombies)
Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower (Dylan)
Talking Heads' Take Me to the River (don't remember)
Kula Shaker's Hush (Deep Purple)
Patty Smythe's Because The Night (Springsteen)

Metallica - Tuesday's Gone (plus the rest of the Garage Inc. album which no one knows about)
Tool - No Quarter (Zeplin cover)
All Along The Watchtower (even Dylan calls Hendrix's version the original)

There's some other one that kicks ass but is slipping my mind at the moment.

Edit: Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World (David Bowie)
Nirvana - Lake Of Fire (The Meat Puppets)

Smoke on the Water by Six Feet Under. :D

I kid! I kid!

Cat Scratch Fever - Pantera
Message in Bottle - Machine Head
Sweet Things - Marilyn Manson

Those are some of my favorite remakes.

To the nth degree!

The hendrix version was cool, but it was ~2:30 long and had lyrics. The Vaughan version is like 8:30 long and is just guitar solos :)

SRV re-did a ton of hendrix songs. Voodoo Chile is another good one.

Santana - Black Magic Woman

is another good one. I've only ever heard the original once, and don't even remember who did it.

What exactly is better about it? Guitar isn't as good, voice isn't as good, no background vocals...
