I'm looking to do a week long family vacation with my family (wife + 6 and 9 years olds) in July/August.

Would like to rent a house or stay at a family resort.

I live in Rochester and I'd like to keep the drive under 5 hrs.

Any suggestions?

You could take the ferry to Toronto if it's opened by then. There will be plenty of good seats available, at least on the way back.

Any particular part of Ontario?

There are literally thousands of great places to go to.

You could try one of our Provencial Parks. Esp. near Lake Huron/Superior. CAA can also give you some great recommendations.

I'll be driving up from Rochester and I'd like to keep the drive under 5 - 6 hours (Rochester's about 1 1/2 hrs from Niagara Falls).

Sadly, my only experience in Ontario is Toronto, Niagara Falls, and Niagara-on-the-Lake. I'm sure that there's plenty of other things to see and do.

We're leaning towards Fern Resort because they have planned activities for the kids.

This province is literally over a thousand miles wide and 600 high!

I grew up in the far north west part and now live in the eastern part but go north to the Georgian Bay area if you enjoy scenery and lakes. Visit a few websites and the Ontario govt has free brochures outlining different parts of the province.

The nice thing is the US dollar goes a long way up here.

Hmmm....

Have you talked to CAA yet? They have lots of brochures and other info that can help you out.
