I'm driving down to DC tomorrow and staying until Sunday morning.
I'm looking for some cool stuff to check out that is perhaps a little less
well known. So what are some things I should check out other than the monuments, etc.?

I'm not big on the tourist spots/crowds/field trip kids thing.

If it helps I'm staying at the Omni Shoreham on Calvert Street NW. I believe it's not far from the national zoo.

Watch the Nats lose, or go to Great Falls Park. Georgetown and Adams Morgan can be fun places also.

If you haven't been there in awhile then check out the new(er) WWII memorial at the mall.

I went for the dedication ceremony with my gramps that served, very nice IMO.

Adams Morgan FTW!

There's a great coffeehouse/lounge/bar called Tryst. Google it and check it out!

WW II memorial is nice, Great Falls Park is very pretty this time of year, if you're up for a drive you can take 66 out west to the Shenandoah Mountains and do that drive.

The Uptown theater is great if a decent movie playing.

Or you could come visit me in my office on 19th and K.

I know these are all well known, and perhaps touristy.... but they are worth the trip. IMHO

The monuments (Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, etc)

The Smithsonians (I've been to most)

Ford's Theater

White House (if you can get in... it was really busy when I tried... had a nice chat with the guard that told me not to stick my arms through the fence as I was trying to get a good picture)

Capitol

Library of Congress

Hard Rock D.C. (Hey..I ate there... it was by Ford's Theater)

National Archives (got to go see the original Declaration of Independence and original copies of the constitution etc)

My GF and I are actually going to the Nats/Mets game on Saturday. She is a huge mets fan.

The Lincoln, Vietnam War, Korean War, World War II, Washington, and FDR Memorials are all close together with the Jefferson Memorial just across the Tidal Basin.

It's hard to get a tour of the US Capital, but across the street you can visit the Supreme Court Building and the Library of Congress, both of which have amazing architecture. The Washington Cathedral is another building with great architecture, but is a little harder to get to.

The American History Museum is closed fore renovations. The Air and Space Museum is my favorite by far, and go to the Dulles extension if you have the means.

I think you can still get tours of the FBI HQ, but haven't been in years.
