I got a lap top for my birthday and I want to now what I should install on it to help keep it running good.

superantispyware and crap cleaner has been working good for me, foxit reader was good till "Midas" gave problems opening pdf files so back to adobe for readers.

I agree, SuperAntiSpyware is a great piece of software!

besides, AntiVir's detection rate is better than AVG's.

That's subjective. They're pretty much one in the same. Detection rates are so skewed and are extremely close anyways, making that a moot point.
