What are some MP3 players that can encode from an external audio source?

A friend who does not have a computer is interested in using an MP3 player. He has about 20 CD's he'd like to rip. I don't know if he intends to get more. If he doesn't have to carry around a bulky CD player and CD's, he probably will buy more.

So far, I've found the iRiver H320 and H340 claim to do it. Does anyone have any experience with these players, or with others?

I have the earlier IHP-140 and have done a bit of recording with it. With that model you have your choice of analog line in or Toslink in. You have your choice of MP3/WAV at a number of bitrates. The encoder sounds fine, at least to my somewhat untutored ear. The main nuisance, of course, is that all such recordings are necessarily done at real time speed, while even the lousiest computer being run on the most conservative settings can easily manage 3-5 times that.

Usually recording on the devices is not high quality. My flash iRiver clone only records at 32kbps WMA.

Not to mention that you'll have to enter in all the track names by hand on the device if recording from an external audio source...

Just tell him to buy a computer or just use a friend's to encode. If he doesn't have a computer, what does he use when he needs a computer? If he uses a friend's or roommate's, then see if he can use that computer for encoding as well.
