those movie are kind of thing you can relate to hong kong's gangster life in the street.
I don't know what are their english titles, but I saw some of them on Internet Video store.
if you don't have asian (chinese) friend, some concepts are hard to understand for western culture.

directed by sergio elon. with robert deniro, elizabeth mcgovern, james woods, and a very young jennifer connelly !
she was like 12 or 13 when she played the younger elizabeth mcgovern character.

imdb also lists joe pesci among the cast. but i don't remember him ! ? !

Not hardcore mafia but Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai and Amongst Friends.

Scarface (not the one with Al Pachino). Was made back in the early 30's and was a standout movie for its time and is still a classic today. A true gangster movie made by the folks who lived it. Super violent for the time it was released. Great acting and great writing, it just had an awesome atmosphere and sense of realism that I haven't seen a gangster movie come close to. I suck as descriptions as you can tell, just rent or buy the damn thing, you won't be disappointed.
