hey guys,
have been experiencing random freezes on a system i just built. it has happened mostly when playing any game (3d FPS's mainly, but even when i run the old black isle game "planescape torment") granted, when it freezes during planescape, it generally recovers after a few seconds. however, when playing games such as hl2 or fear, a freeze results in a total system lockup, sometimes a crash. after a crash. o get errors about my vid card drivers, but have tried every possible set of drivers i could find for the evga 8800gts 320 superclocked that i'm running. i'd also like to test my memory, and anything else i can think of as well. thanks all for suggestions and any advice you may have!!

3DMark06 for graphics card
in-game benchmarks/stress tests for graphics card (FEAR and CS:S have them amongst others)
Prime95/Orthos for CPU
Memtest86+ for memory

Edit: holy crap Planescape: Torment was such an amazing game!

I'd check your IRQ for resource conflicts (one of the Menu options under Hardware Device Manager), especially since you have a Soundblaster.

On my MB if the Sound card is in one of the first PCI slots the IRQ is shared with the PCIex card

System didn't like that, and I experienced pretty much what you're going through.

thanks for the input guys! i checked for IRQ conflicts, had some stuttering when listening to music the other day on itunes as well, SB card might be the culprit. no conflicts came up, but since the mb comes with onboard sound, cut it off just in case. i had installed the SB card in the last pci slot as it had caused probs with my AGP card in a previous rig, hopefully disabling the onboard sound helped take care of it. will try all the stress tests, thanks for the tips!!
