What are some good non-linear games?

I'm looking for a game that's non-linear and offers much freedom to do whatever you want but of course you still have some kind of mission/purpose (e.g. GTA).

Any suggestions?

What genre? There are a lot of RPG's that are very non-linear (Morrowind and Fallout come to mind), but that may not be what you are looking for.

Morrowind was a very good non-linear game, but definitely get the expansions too. It's like $33 or something for all the expansions and morrowind in a bundle. The best thing I remember from that game is when I found out I didn't have to help anyone. Lady asks me to escort her in exchange for 200 gold, I kill her and take the 200 gold. EXCITING! Plus you design your own spells which is fun too.

i'm really open to any genre.

I've tried Morrowind before but didn't really like it.

I liked Gothic...is Gothic II any good?

And there's a new game called Bard's Tale that's coming out too?
