for around 1200 and under, what are some good laptops?

i guess ergonomics, reliability, and battery life would be my first priority
following that would be performance and portability, i dont think it will be lugged around often

built in wireless ethernet card is nice, so is cd-rw. good graphics and sound arent really stressed. ram would be, though!

those are the criterias

what are some lines of really good quality laptops?

Mac ibook, if you're not committed to a Wintel laptop. I have 2 desktop PC's, and just got my first Mac, an 800MHz ibook with combo DVD-CDRW drive for $1200, and so far I love it. I don't really do anything intensive on it, web surfing, some word processing, and a little photo editing. Mainly got it just so I could sit on the couch and do all that stuff and not be tied to a desk. The PC's I saw in the same price range really just didn't impress me.

As far as your needs go:
Battery life: good, lowest I've gotten the battery so far is 20%, and that was after 3.5hrs of using it.
Wireless: Airport card: $80, easy to install
Graphics/Sound: decent, but not really what this laptop is made for (or any sub $1500 notebook IMHO)
DVD/CDRW: on the higher model (800MHz-$1199(discontinued), 900MHz-$1299), regular CD-ROM on the $999 model
RAM: at 128MB standard, really crappy. Cheap enough to upgrade to 384 or 640 though.
Reliability: I don't know yet, but I've heard good things.
Ergonomics: I would've liked a 2-button trackpad, but I'm getting used to it. Otherwise, good. And it's so purty!

Good luck with your search!

I really, really like my Dell Inspiron 600m, although you might need to find some rebates and stuff to get the price down to where you want it.

Toshiba Satellite Series, I have had this notebook as my MAIN computer for the last 3 years at it has been on 24/7
the whole time, I never take it anywhere. But its been running like a dream plus I have a BUS card (USB2.0) with 2 External 120 gig maxtors and a External DVD Burner. This Laptop has been a dream Plus I use a FINGER Mouse with it, It makes it cool to lean back at surf! SO I recommend a Toshiba, It has a TV out also so I just Stream DiVX Movies to my TV from it.

Price wise its a good deal PLUS try some reliable dealers on ebay. but only dealers with 1,000's of Positives and very low Negs there are some out there.

I know some of you are wondering WHY is he using his laptop as a desktop well I bought this laptop when I needed a
computer on my lap when I was stuck in a bed for 8 months after my accident. (Long Story no one cares about)

Overpriced? I'm not sure what you mean...My iBook cost me $1200, a similar PC notebook in features/performance/size would be the Dell Latitude X200, at $1499, without a CD-RW. As far as your sister goes, why do you think she won't like Mac? My girlfriend, who knows little about computers, took the the Mac in less than an hour of me teaching her. I think it's more intuitive than the PC. And I don't have to worry about her downloading viruses/spyware :D

If you're committed to Wintel, I would recommend IBM, they're pretty much the standard-bearer for PC laptops for the last few years.

Ive seen a few catalogs for mac products and it seems to be that the 12" Powerbook starts at 1700$. and the 17" is priced astronomically higher!

i wouldnt mind learning mac OS. but my sister doesnt really want to have to adapt to a new OS. she just needs her own computer and wants it in laptop form instead :)

While I am getting a powerbook soon, I disagree with that article.

The Dell Latitude X200 is NOT a low-end laptop. It is designed as an ultraportable, to be small at all costs. The ibooks aren't. They aren't any smaller than equivalent Dell Inspirons.

He should have compared the iBook to the Dell Inspiron 1100. The Dells are usually 15% cheaper than their Apple "equivalents."

Inspiron 1100

While I'm not ragging on the Apple, cuz I'm not...the X200 isn't designed to be a cheap, low-end. He is using faulty logic to support his case.

overpriced is a harsh term, but not far from the truth IMHO, the last 800MHZ "Wintel" notebook i came accross was a Sony Vaio, it was 850MHz, and had a HUGE 15"screen, 20GB HDD, 128MB RAM, DVD, modem and network and a decently stable windows 2000 Pro, all for half the ibook at $649... so id lean to that one... yeah... but its just my opinion :) however, ibooks, admittedly, are better quality with motorola processors, better architecture, break less often and last just as long as any "Wintel", so theres a trade off speaking from a service techs perspective seeing what actually COMES IN for service, we are motorola certified and fully qualified to work on apple products, but see them in only once per 50 "Wintels"

its up to you ;)

Yeesh
Clock speed isn't everything, you know. 1 cycle on an Intel is not 1 cycle on a motorola.
