If you have friends that don't play WoW, I'd advice not getting it. Get a game you can play with your buddies, that is definitely the way to go. Diablo 2 is just about perfect for this, you can either play online for free or just make single player characters and quest through the whole thing together on LAN.

command & conquer:generals and cc:g zero hour. you can buy the deluxe version which has both for not too much and online multiplyer is free.

Planescape: Torment is probably one of the best games ever produced...give it a whirl. The graphics are dated by today's standards but the storyline is phenomenal.

My recent game addiction is "Spring"
It's pretty much a 3d remake of the old RTS game "Total Annihilation" with some rebalancing and new units.

I really really really really dig it.
Also, it's open source.

Just finished SW: KOTOR and starting KOTOR II. Never played these before, but I could see why there received a lot of praises. They have a lot of replay value, as you can play as male/female and light/dark.
