What are some good companies to go after in the Stock Market?

I was going to pick maybe AMD, Comcast, Disney but I don't think they are going to do too well.

Why would you "pick" those? If you want to invest and not gamble, you need to do your homework. You are not going to give yourself a proper risk/reward profile by asking people over the internet.

The cornerstone of investing is research. Valuations, leverage models and so and so forth. None of which you will find here.

That being said, currently, I like both shipping and ore producers. Two good places to start.

For typical investors, I think index funds make much more sense than picking individual stocks (espcially if you don't have a lot to invest and won't be able to "diversify" with a lot of individual names).

Most "pro" stock pickers can't beat the market; there is little hope for the retail investor.
