What are some good books on the Roman Empire?

The Decline and Fall etc. is THE Work by Gibbon. It is a very challenging read. The English language has evolved a lot since the late 1700s when this work was written. It contains a lot of infromation, though somewhat shaded by Gibbons world view, he gives a very interesting version of the history of the early Christian Chuch. With a bit of effort it is a very rewarding read. Do not expect to get through it in a few days.

For a lot of fun reading, but yet still quite a bit of interesting history read these and this - the "Masters of Rome" series by Colleen McCullough.

They are fiction, but very well researched nonetheless.

Personally I prefer Greek. I studied Greek mythology when I was in college. Talk about one of the hardest class you can take. I have no problem with the major deities, but there are like tons of minor ones, supporting characters, and their kids.
Its all one big inbred family. 😉

I dabbled a bit in Greek Mythology when I was younger. I liked the Hades and Persephone story. As well as the Hercules story.

I'm reading A History of Rome to A.D. 565 at the moment. I'm not quite good enough with Latin yet to read Cicero, Livy, Plutarch, Appian, etc., so I'm looking for high quality books in English.

Thoughts?

Cheers!

"I, Claudius" was a fun work of fiction, not what you're looking for but fun anyhow. 🙂

Is it bad that I read this thread title and knew it was you without even seeing your username?
