What are some good books on the Roman Empire?

C'mon... help me out. You know you wanna. I'm just gonna have to default to Gibbons if no one has any other suggestions.

Personally I prefer Greek. I studied Greek mythology when I was in college. Talk about one of the hardest class you can take. I have no problem with the major deities, but there are like tons of minor ones, supporting characters, and their kids.

I want to learn Greek as well, but that's at least a few years in the future (probably take night classes after I start my career). Seeing as how many of the Roman deities are built off of Greek ones, I'm interested in Greek mythology as well.

IIRC The rise and fall of the Roman Empire is standard reading?

EDIT:
I must be thinking of http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0140443622/

You mean THE work by Edward Gibbons?
I don't know jack about ancient history, but this is by Publius, in translation.

Hey, Polybius! I didn't see that it was a translation. I confused it with The Rise And Fall of the Roman Empire, by Edward Gibbon.

Hahah, I sure mangled his name. 🙂

He's Greek, it's okay. 😛

Do you know offhand of a place where I can find a more complete translation? (this one got some bad reviews because they had apparently cut out some sections of Polybius' writing)

I still remember one time we spent the entire 3 hours lecture on just the Parthenon. How tall the original Athena statue was and what materials (Ivory, Gold..etc) were used and the weight of the materials.

I'm confused about Gibbon's work. Is it The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire or The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire? Or are these two separate works of his?

Apparently it's the History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. I guess it's a separate book that's the "Rise and Fall".
