Well, some of the car people here have mentioned 'slicks' in their posts. What are they and what do they do?

No tread = bigger contact patch, no tread block "squirming" and better traction in dry conditions.

If you drove em in the rain, you'd be slick, relative to the ground. hence the name.

Slicks are a dry weather racing tire that is used because the space between treadblocks give no traction on dry pavement. Often they have a softer compound that can be sticky when hot. These are not street legal because they offer virtually no wet traction, resistance to hydroplaning, or traction on loose surfaces. That is why there are "cheater slicks", or tires with the absolute minimum tread depth and tread pattern. Typically 3 or 4/32nds. (2/32nds is the DOT minimum, after that, your tires can't be on the road)
