what are 'relay mailboxes'?

if no one knows, i'll take pics tommorw morning. it's dark outside now and my camera doesn't do much in the dark.

I always figured that the mail trucks dropped off mail there, and that's where the local mailmen picked up the mail at.

probably just what it sounds like, a mailman leaves mail there for another mailman, maybe your outgoing mail collected by the route person is dropped there to be picked up and taken to the distribution center?

Hmm, could be that too.

The mail carrier(on foot) stores the mail they collect throughout the day in that box so they don't have to carry it all, then they retrieve it all at the end of their shift.
