takes a snapshot of your hdd with a true image of everything on it as it is- and can restore it in that exact condition as if it were brand new. so you won't have to reload all of your apps again.

The image on my current rig is very small. About 5 GB for just the windows image and apps themselves (basic apps and motherboard drivers, and all lof the operating system tweaks. Cable modem tweaks, registry edits - everything. It restores it to like new. Right now I use Acronis and like it better than Norton. As a matter of fact, im going to restore a fresh image tonight as well as build an M7NCG 400 system with a barton for my In Laws :) Should take about 3 hours to build and tuck wires very neat and I'll Prime 95 it overnight. There are other ways of doing it without an image. You can boot to your windows CD and pick reinstall the operating system, you would get a fresh installl, but you would have to reinstall most apps and get SP1 and DX9 again ... etc... alot of people do it that way. Or use system restore to a known good point.

we need some kinda 1 or 2gb installable hard drive unit that can sustain over 1GB/s for the price of today's 74gb raptor or something
that would be nice

this will increase the hard drive latency heirarchy
and if implemented right will be like adding L2 to cpu's or the buffer to hard drives :)

Google smithy. Google key words like "windows tweaks". Tons if sites out there dedicated to these things. I have a 4 page manual I made myself after trying endless tweaks to see which ones are best for me. You'll just have to experiment with tweaks. There are some programs that do it for you. Smoker XO, tweak XP Pro, Ace Utilities. I use Ace (you can find it at cnet) for basic stuff and I have a folder with my won registry tweaks that I imported as files. So even if I lose my image they'll always be there.
