So I want to upgrade my TV. Currently, the Samsung UN55KS8000 model is about $1299 or so. Now, Frys has been running a promotion of no sales tax on 4k TV's, so this saves about $103 bucks. Best Buy will price match the price, but not the total price, to me that's not a true price match. Just looking for what others think about price matching in general. Then we have upcoming possible sales around the holidays, so me waiting for those is very hard to resist, I am a guy, I WANT IT NOW. :mask:

Never done it. I buy from the place that has the price I want to pay. I don't feel like dicking around with sales clerks or managers.

I've done it many times by showing their competitors current ad. Some places "claim" PM plus extra 10% off.
As always YMMV on who the sales manager/person you deal with. I get promo codes from Fry's almost every day on their sales thru email.

+1

Not worth it. I shop around for best price at the stores I want to do business with. And if I pay a little more to get it from a quality store rather than a shithole they deserve to charge a little more for being better.

Maybe I didn't word it correctly, I was asking what people think about the price match policy of places. In this case, BB isn't giving me the lowest price since they still say they will add the sales tax.

That ain't no price match.

You should buy your TVs at Costco anyway, what are you doing?

That may be where I end up getting it, so they are of course in the running. The current price they have on it is at $1279, that price is good until Saturday. So its possible it will go down, I will know Sunday or Monday. But as of today, Frys is the best total price.

I never bother with that myself, I just buy it at the place that's cheaper, usually. For stuff like a TV, there's a local electronics store here that I typically try to support, their prices are usually on par with the big chains anyway.

This isn't directly related, but many credit cards will refund you the price difference if something you buy drops in price afterward. It has to be at the same store though.

I usually price match at Best Buy because I have their points card. They are usually cool with it and I don't have that many options anyway.

How long afterwards, Costco gives 30 days for their own prices, BB is 15. I was planning on just paying cash or debit card, but that can change. I could also have 90 days at Costco, but that would require returning the TV and buying another at a lower price if it went past 30 days or so.

Only time I price match is when I need something right away. Such as when I needed a new modem. Went to bestbuy and price matched amazon. Still had to pay tax, but no waiting two days.

Price matching is too much of a hassle. You have to prove the other store's price, prove that it is in stock (sometimes must be proven that it is in stock locally), prove that the company you are dealing with has a price match policy, prove that the details of the price match policy meets your end-goal, etc.

Instead, haggling is easy. Say you will pay $X for the item. They either say yes and you are happy or no and you leave. Easy as can be.

If $X happens to be the price of another store, great, you just did a price match but with far less hassle. But you can try even lower if you want.

They are required by law to charge the sales tax, I never consider sales tax to be part of price matching.

I've only done it once, by chance. And it wasn't even the same product!
I checked out what Best Buy had to offer, then headed over to a nearby Circuit City(?) to see what they had to offer before pulling the trigger on a receiver. CC sold Onkyos. Not knowing anything about receivers, I chatted with the salesman, hoping for info to make a decision. I mentioned a Yamaha I'd seen over at BB and the salesman said the Onkyo TXSR??? was basically the same. Taking that info on board, I said I'd head over to BB and get the Yamaha then, seeing as it was equivalent to the Onkyo under discussion and $20 cheaper. Salesman said to wait up and he'd go check with a manager about flexibility on price. A few minutes later he comes back and gives me a discount on the Onkyo and I walk out with it. hehehe

But yet Frys is doing it, so I assume Frys might pay the tax in the promotion. IMHO, BB properly price matching means matching the out the door price, however they have to do it to be legal is what should be done. So sell the TV even lower, add the sales tax and match the total price of Frys.

I think a business gets to make its policy and I get to decide where I spend my money. I'll make my case, but I'd never get testy with a manager over it. (Not saying you did). I do like to get the lowest price, so I don't mind doing a little legwork to get the price match.
