What are Orks?

I just bought Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War today. Seems like a fun game, although I've only played the tutorial and the first mission so far, but something is bugging me. What the hell are Orks? It is never explained - are they aliens that invade planets, are they the natives and are the humans invading, what? What are they, whats the deal? It seems like if you buy a game set in a fantasy setting you are just expected to know.

From a quick wiki search.

"Orks had been created, in times long past, as a warrior race by the long-vanished Brain Boyz. (This theme recurs in recent editions, the Orks having been created by the Old Ones to fight the Necrons in the war that shattered their galactic civilization that existed prior to the rise of the Eldar.) In early editions, the snotlings were said to be the last degenerate remnant of the Brain Boyz."

Basically they were genetically engineered warriors created by one of the most ancient races of the galaxy.

There's LOTS of good WH/WH40k fluff out there. Just wiki search for Warhammer 40,000. Back story to all the races, special characters, racial hierarchies, SM chapter history... the universe is huge.
