my hitachi sata drive idles around 37-39C when my room is a little bit warm because of the summer heat. not sure if this is an issue. the problem is that there is no way for me to add cooling to the lower drive area in the antec p180. design oversight if you ask me.

That sounds fine. My hard drives in my SLK3700-AMB case range from 35C in the cooled cage to 41C, for a drive in the 3.5" bay. Still not too bad. Bad is my dad's PC, where he had 3 hard drives crammed together in the 3.5" bays. One drive exceeded 60C regularly. THAT is hot. I put the middle drive into a 5.25" bay. They're all considerably cooler now.

Mine are at 30-31C in the summer, mid to low 20's in the winter. I read some article saying that mtbf decreases fast after temps hit over 30C, so i try and keep them around there

I've got a brand new 80 gig that sits at 39 in a cool room but un-ventilated case. A 3 year old 40 gig sits at 41 [primary] and a 5 year old 20 gig at 40. Rar'ing across the drives or quickpar'ing on my main puts temps at 50s. I've noticed that putting a tiny house fan near them dropped their temps to the teens, so I think a prime componant of their heat is latent heat in the air around them.
