what are newsgroups?

You can access newsgroups by getting a good news reader, such as FreeAgent or Newsbin Pro. You will need to find out the nntp server name from your isp (usually something like "news.yourisp.com" or "nntp.yourisp.com".

where do i get one of these news readers?

Try Here

Outlook Express can also be configured as a newsreader (albeit a crappy one).

Your ISP should be able to help you configure either program.

I could explain it all to you myself, but someone else has already done the hard work.

Go here and learn how to use newsgroups.

I found it via google search for: how do I use newsgroups

One word of advice... don't post in a newsgroup with your real email addy. 🙂

Good luck!

Oh, and one last word of advice.

Stay away from the illegal groups... ISP's can track what you download off newsgroups.

illegal=?

it should be obvious from the names

so porn? or just teen porn? warez, etc?

yeah like "warez"
anyway newsgroups is mainly used for legitimate discussions. added with the spam, groups containing what you might want to find would be in the minority and you need to look hard
