I had a Toshiba 1735 (celeron 700 mhz, 192 megs of RAM) that would play both Divx and Xvid movies with no problems. As far as mp3's go, I used to run them on a 133 Mhz machine (just don't do much else while playing it).

With some sort of hardware assist by a chip like ATI, I'd say a P2-266 would run a DVD okay. Without hardware assist, and running straight off of the CPU for software decoding, I'd say 400MHZ P2 or better to have fairly smooth video.

For MP3's, a clunky old 133 will run them ok assuming the sound hardware doesn't suck something terrible.

heh I couldn't do it on my 133mhz P1 with 72megs of EDO ram. I had to convert them to .wav files, which meant I could store about 6 of them on my 1.5 gig hard drive.
