IR lights for night vision? Why?

It works similar to a spotlight, if I'm not mistaken.

Er, no, I meant:

They could be used for IR lights for night vision (like a spotlight, as you say). Why do you (OP) ask about an IR LED bulb and its use?

i started working in the microwave & defense electronics world in 1980.
thought i knew most of the categories of electronic military components.

i found out about these, and wondered what they're used for.

i was aware of night vision goggles & IR sensors. i didn't know they
were used in conjunction with IR spotlights.

that would imply they need a focussing (sort of like collimating, beam
channeling, not sure what the right word is) device to focus the beam over
the area under surveillance.

IIRC, older IR systems weren't sensitive enough for ambient signals and so required a spotlight. Here's a pic of an older tank with one. I thought they'd been phased out with the newer/better IR detectors. Obviously, shining a light on something is a good way to get seen first (assuming the enemy has IR detection of their own).
