Haven't done the web research, but is there a good consensus on the top brands of washing and drying machines... and/or tips on how to buy these things?

If someone here has lots of experience on specific models, how about 1500$-2000$ for the sit-on-top front loading machines. thanks

Try Sears? I like that LG one that "freshens" up your clothes for you. No need to iron anymore.

Fck Sears...You can usually get a better price from your local appliance store...and get the same or better "extended warranty" for less as well.

For years we'd own nothing but Whirlpool or Kenmore branded Whirlpool appliances...until the Calypso washer..."The BEST washer we sell" Sears said...what a POS this thing has been.

There was a huge class-action lawsuit over them, but (fortunately for us I guess) we experienced none of the covered repairs, so we were excluded from the suit.
Still, it isn't a great machine...washing action just isn't as good as one of the old agitator machines.

For my money however, especially for a front loader, Whirlpool is still the best in the market, followed by G.E.

I'm strongly Anti-China in my buying, so the L.G. machines aren't even considered when we buy appliances, and there are lots of stories about poor quality with some of them. (Maybe they're getting better...time will tell)

I do like the "Steam-Freshening" concept in some of L.G.'s front-loaders, and hopefully, some of the American manufacturers will adopt that into their product lines.

kenmore elite 5t...so quiet....and colorful.

oh yeah, whirlpool is buying out most of the washer dryer companies right now....Kenmore's are rebadged whirlpools with extra goodies. They just bought GE and maytag. LG is on its own and I do not know much about those. Samsung are okay.

2 yrs ago we bought a Bosch set from lowe's w/4 yr extended warranty (thankfully, as it turns out). apparently, that model washer was riddled with defects - cracking of the plastic casing around the controls and a TERRIBLE moldy smell from the washer that would not go away. upon later online searching (epinions.com) i found many people with the exact same issues.

lowe's was very good at sending repairmen out to fix. that is, until we hit our "lemon" stage of having the 4th repair for the same problem. they denied replacing the unit since the moldy smell didn't affect the operation of the machine. I conferenced called Bosch CSR with Lowes CSR and hammered it out. The CSR from Bosch saw my history and that we had 12 repair visits (6 to diagnose then 6 to make the repairs).

I told her lowe's refused to replace. after about 10 minutes of going around and around, she said she would authorize the replacement with a newer model. it's been about 8 months and have had absolutely none of the issues we had with the old model.

all that being said, i think we'd go with a Duet - i believe it was consumer reports #1 last year.

I believe that LG is a korean brand, not chinese.

Paykel And Fischer washing machine. It's top-loading, which, trust me, is easier than front loading. Nice thing about this thing is that it has no belts and the entire tub rides atop magnets. Once it gets up to speed it stays there for a minute so the clothes are practically dry when they come out. Oh, and it's about as low as a washing machine can be for energy useage. They're from new Zealand and are big in Europe.
