What are good temps for a Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz ?

Try using either Intel Thermal Analysis Tool or Core Temp. They're the programs most people are (or at least should) be using. Then mention the temps you've seen with one of them (they should both give the same temperature, so it doesn't matter which one you use), people will be able to tell you whether your temps are good or not.

FYI - I'm getting about 50c on both cores according to both of the apps you mentioned. Is this normal?

Are you running any programs when you get that reading? For example, is Orthos or any games running in the background?

If so, yes, that's somewhat normal for a hot room or case with bad airflow. If not, no, that's way too hot for a processor at idle.

I suggest you reseat your heatsink and apply Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste (after removing whatever's on their now), then enjoy cooler temperatures. 🙂

Sorry, had a file sharing program, with AIM running in the background.

Now its at 41c at close to idle (since i still have my antivirus and antispyware running). is this ok? What's an ideal temp? And whats too hot?

IMHO it's anything over 65C. Intel specifies the C2D/X with a max temperature of around 61C and a maximum absolute temp of 85C, and the cpu starts throttling at around 80C. Regardless anything over 65C means you've got cooling issues that should be resolved.

Um, ive got an e6300 that idles at about 50-52C and load temps are abt 61C..stock HSF with AS5 but fan runs at abt 700rpm on my DS3. If i disable fan speed control temps drop to 47 and 57 respectively. Could it be because of the Indian winter? Room temps are about 25C....
