What are good server naming conventions?

We're adding servers to our network here in the apartment, so we need a naming convention.

Ones we can't use (already used by our employers):

- Bond villains
- Transformers villains

Any suggestions?

I was thinking maybe a line of sports cars, such as various Porsche models, but the problem with that is I would run out quickly..

Periodic Table...

192.168.1.1 = h.domain.com
192.168.1.2 = he.domain.com
192.168.1.3 = li.domain.com
...

Or like me... names of characters from Ultima VII (avatar,batlin,iolo,dupre,shamino,spark,blackgate <-- the nat box)

You could name them after foodstuffs.

My main rig: Potato Salad
My soon to be alternate: Four Whole Fried Chickens and a Coke.

I suggested the Dahm triplets, but he wanted more than three possible name...

Kinda overkill to have <3 servers on a network that has never seen more than four workstations at a time.

Nothing wrong with copying when it's a good idea :) or even better

192.168.1.1 = one.domain.com
192.168.1.2 = two.domain.com
...

err, I guess that doesn't work higher up

192.168.1.200 = twohundred.domain.com

:p

Wait a min. that's too long to have a host name set to "Four_Whole_Fried_Chickens_and_a_Coke" that's 36 charactors. I want names that I can set the host names to.

We're also hosting a Website and some other services (exchange). Plus I need to be able to add test servers and have plenty of names for them.

192.168.1.5 = V.domain.com
192.168.1.34 = XXXIV.domain.com

huh? Come on! Someone must like it!

A certain company I used to work for used the first 3 letter for the region(say, if you lived in Atlanta, you'd say ATL), the 4th letter to specify server or workstation(S/W). Then I the rest is up to whatever. I used the names of robots I like.

I do software installs at a lot of big company's datacenters, so I've seen a ton of different naming conventions. The majority I've seen use number/letter system like, "mkt2033flsv1". Some like to name by location and role of the server. I've also seen Disney characters, names of trees, greek gods, and sunday paper comic characters.

You guys know what is really funny here.

I made the decision to start over a month or so ago (big decision, tons of work and tons of change), had no problem assigning hardware and services/network roles to the various boxes (sat down and wrote them out, didnt take more than an hour). And yet the thing that stumps me is host names...

It seems asinine to name your servers after their IP address. The whole point of a machine's name is to act as a mnemonic for the IP address for local name resolution (or non-local if these are used for your DNS records as well).
