1) 120gig or higher

2) Western Digital

3) It depends on how you will use it, raptor sound good but not high in space for storage

thatsright

Pretty much ANYTHING, except Maxtor!!

I agree with Smithy. Of course I have a 120Gig WD SE drive with 8MB cache and it's ultra quite. In fact, my case fans are louder than the drive at full speed.

And thats my $0.02

Seagate IMO is among the most reliable

there is no noticable increase in speed/performance from IDE to SATA unless we are talking about a 10k rpm drive

I would say

1. Western Digital
2. Seagate

Its hard to say which of these two is best, but regardless, they are both great drive manuf. and Ive never had problems with either.

Just don't get a Maxtor!!!

None are as reliable as they used to be it seems.

I've had great luck with seagates and maxtors. I have just recently started using samsungs and they seem great so far.

I have had bad luck with western digitals and I avoid them.

1) 120gb's
2) Seagate or possibly WD
3) I'm trying to decide myself

My WD WD400JB has already died once (40gb, 8mb cache). I'm using an RMA'ed drive now. This one sound identical to the original, and both have exceeded at annoying the crap out of me. They're loud. I've owned six WD drives in the past 7 years (including this RMA'ed one). Two have died died. That's a pretty bad failure rate, don't you think (33%)? One is still running strong. I guess I sold the rest.

I've had two Maxtors. One was really loud and was taking about 5 seconds to spin up, so I sold it as-is and emphasized my concern for its problems. The guy didn't have any problems with it. My other Maxtor isn't quite a year old, and has given me no trouble. None have officially failed, but I doubt that other drive will last. It was about 3 years old. So, reliability is iffy.

I've owned three Seagate drives. One has been going strong for two years. One was DOA, but Newegg sent me another brand new one, and it has done great so far. It's only a few months old, but it's in a computer that is used as a print and file server. I'd say it's done well. It's the quietest drive I've used. I think I'm going to buy a Seagate to replace my WD400JB.

Just look at the manufacturer's warranty

WD Raptors ~ 5 years
Samsung SpinPoint ~ 3 years
Everyone else ~ 1 year

Raiding the Samsung drives would likely provide considerable space, quiet, cool, and good performance; say 2 of the 80, 120 or 160GB SATA drives for around $200. If you really want the speed and warranty go for the WD Raptors, at twice the price and a noticeable increase in performance, not as quiet or cool though. (not 2x the speed of the Samsungs either)

Seagate SCSI drives will offer the best reliabillity and speed, however, if you have a budget, Either WD Raptors or Seagate IDE drives come to mind.

The Reliability Ranking!

I'm a tech....I work on computers all year round. Here is the order from best to worst that I have determined in my experience. This is currently how I see things....over the years I'm sure it will change though.

1. Samsung
2. Seagate
3. Western Digital
4. IBM/Hitachi
5. Maxtor

There is a pretty decent gap between 3 and 4 :)

Samsungs may not be the fastest drive, but where I work we have sold a LOT of them over the last few years and I have had to RMA one of them....maybe two. I see a lot more dead Maxtor/Quantum/IBM drives than anything else. Of course...IBM used to be number one back in the good old days. We sell WD's now mainly, and I've had to RMA a few of them.

Josephus - WD has 5 year warranty on Raptors, 3 year on Special Edition drives. Samsung has 3 year. Some Maxtors have like 1.5...I think some of the higher end ones are 3 year. Seagate I think their SATA drives are 3 year. I don't even know what IBM/Hitachi is anymore.

As well as others.

Usually 3 years on 120GB+ drives and 1 year on 80GB or lower. Basically varies from model (i.e SATA or PATA) and manufacturer.

You need to update your warranty list. WD now all 1 year except for Raptors and SCSI. Hitachi is 3 years for the 8M buffer and 1 year for the 2MB buffer.
Samsung I think is 3 year. Everyone else is 1 year. With Western Digital extendable to 3 year for $14.95. I had one Maxtor failed and two WD failed.
I am trying the Hitachi now since they recently had some great deals at Fry's and still got a 3 year warranty on the 8MB retail box.

I bought two WD 2000JB's (8meg cache) in July/August of 2003. Beginning in February I had a drive start making high pitch noises, then it failed... no spin up. Got a replacement. A month to month and a half later the second drive started making the same noises. Bam... no more spinup. Then the first rma replacement died. Then the second rma replacement died. I sold one of the rma's and then told them they need to send me a different model of drive for the other one. The sent me a WD 2500JB and it seems to be ok...for now. I will not purchase another non raptor WD drive again. That was ridiculous that I had 4 hard drives go bad within a matter of months. They gave me the run around trying to get me to run diagnostics on them when I called one of the times and I finally hung up and called another tech. The first guy wouldn't listen to me when I told him the drive had a bad baring or some sort of mechanical failure.

I think everyone has his bad moments with either company.
I myself prefer WD and Seagate more. They proved great for me

Samsungs' are getting great reviews from customers at newegg, I'm looking at getting 2 for a RAID based multi media server.

No, actually WD 8MB Special Edition drives do carry a 3 year warranty. However, the RETAIL ones do not. Only the bare/OEM drives carry the 3-year. I sell them all the time and they do in fact have 3 year on OEM ones. Don't ask me why not on the Retail...makes no sense to me.
