I just got a job at a saw mill and I need music to keep me from going insane.

I dont know anything about good headphone frequency so Im asking if anyone can help me out in understanding what is good and what is bad.. stuff like is 20hz good or what?

Its kind of lud there so I want to be able to actually hear music decently as well as catch as much frequency range as possible.

Im just looking for those kind that you shove into your ear, not the ear muff looking things.

Thanks

What about something big that covers the whole ear like Bose Triports, would those work better to drown out outside noise?

Maybe it is just me but I don't think I would want to wear headphones while working at a saw mill. You might want to ask around at work. It is possible they might have a rule against wearing headphones.

From Shure specs:
Sound Isolating Technology The E2c's in ear design, using foam or flex sleeves, naturally blocks background noise. This allows lower listening volumes in loud environments. No batteries or extra equipment are needed for sound isolation.

Are you working with saws or other dangerous equipment? You don't want to impair your senses.

For earphones, definitely the Shure E2Cs as Mr N8 mentioned. For headphones though, i LOVE the Sony MDR-Z700... i know there are complaints about them, but it definitely isn't about the sound quality, but about the plastic hinges/whatever on the earphones themselves. They won't last long, if you use them daily, they'll probably break on you in a year. But i've NEVER had a headphone last me a year yet, so i don't really care (i've had Senns and Grados previously, and they all broke as well).

Sennheiser HD-570s are great and don't need an amp. Check ebay, they were around $70 when I bought mine.

Mr N8 got it right. When you want optimal noise isolation, you wanna go w/ the ear canal phones. Also check out canal phones by Etymotic and Ultimate Ears. Bose is overpriced crap, period.

Are saw mills the exception to protective ear wear? I thought lots of other places with dangerous machine that's really loud had the operators wear protective ear gear or at least some kind of foam earplug...

No its not dangerous there. Usually I just stand there and feed wood into machines and stuff like that.. very repetative and boring (great pay though). hense the music.

Those look totally AWESOME but way too much $$ for me. I just got ripped off on ebay buying mp3 players :S

That's actually very reasonably priced for what you need. The Shure E2C retails at $99 and is the cheapest canal phone in the line up.

There's only 1 thing i don't like about the Shure's, and that is if you turn your head a lot, they can tug on them. The way you wear them, is that you wrap them around your ears, so the wires hang from the back of your head... and you adjust the 'cinch' (probably not the right word) on it to tighten it around your head. And unless you have your mp3 player on your back, the wires will then wrap around your neck to the front of your body. Otherwise, the Shure's are great. Also, i've only wore them for an hour or two at a time at the gym, so i don't know how comfortable they would be to wear all day.

i love my Shure E2c's.

while studying, i can put very soft classical music on my mp3 player and it sounds like i'm in a quiet library with soft ambient music. even when i'm in a noisy coffee shop

If the Shure's are too expensive, check out these Sony Headphones. They have good sound, they just don't block out background noise nearly as well as the Shure's.

I agree. Even when my batteries die at the gym, i still leave the earphones in, and it drones out all the noise.

yep, there have been many occasions when i put on the headphones without music just to study in silence.

btw, do you have any problems with sweat, using them in the gym?

manufacturer stats don't mean jack. If you want isolation, but can't afford the cheapest shure, pour wax into your ear canals.
