What are good comfort foods to offer after a death in the family?

Just had the grandfather of a good friend pass away. I would like to make them something or buy them something as a comfort food offering. Something they can easily eat or reheat that might make things feel better.

Any ideas?

Chicken soup too cliche?

I made that for my gf and her brothers and dad after her mom died. :(

Whatever you make, make sure it doesn't involve any dishes for them to wash.

..send em a fully cooked turkey with all the fixins and apple pie. I did that for some relatives and they loved it.

There are companies that will deliver food from a restraunt that normally does not deliver. I'd send over some braised beef short ribs (no these are not like your typical ribs at all), of course with the typical sides.

Speaking from experience...

I would say anything that is a full meal to where they don't have to do anything will help. When my dad died last August, it was really nice to have people bring over ready-to-eat meals like spaghetti, lasanga, whatever to eat.
