What are average/acceptable Palomino 2000+ cpu temps

I just set up a system with a 2000+. I have very little experience with AMD cpu's. At idle it is running at 50 celcius. The heatsink I have on it now is rated for 2100+ so it is at it's limits. I have another cooler coming that is rated for 3000+. In the mean time, it dawned on me that I really don't have any idea what a normal temp range might be. I've done some looking around and not found any good site that says anything much more than it can run up to 90 C. From what I can gather so far it seems 40-50 C may be acceptable, though one site said that they like to see 35 C. Also what is an acceptable top end when you are working the cpu?

Thanks for any feedback

If it's stable, it's OK. 65C or lower should be completely stable.

My 2000+ idle'd around 45C and load temps varied from 50 - 54C, depending on the room temperature. This was with the stock AMD HS and fan, and 3 80mm case fans.

I've owned two different Palominos, and both of them would crash and reboot at 54°C, whether overclocked or not. Your results may vary, but I can almost guarantee you that you won't get a Pal to run stable, if at all, at anything over 60°C.

The original HSF I was using ended up being to small. The temp kept creeping up into the lower 60's at idle. I swapped it with another one until the new one shows up. This one runs at 54C at idle, and it held at 57C through a 6 hour run of hot cpu tester lite.

Yeah, lower 60's at idle is way to high, if you plan on ever using that processor for anything besides web surfing! And 57C still seems too high to me, but if you've got a better heatsink on the way, the one you have on it for now will be just fine.

I installed the new cpu fan today. It's a Thermaltake Volcano 10+ all copper, rated for 3400+XP or 2600+MP. It is running under load at 52C. The second cooler I pulled from it was an Alpha pal 6035. It ran at 57C under load. These temps are coming from the utility that came with the MSI board, in windows. So it appears that without wanting to get noiser, bigger, going to water or spending extravagantly, it seems that this is were it's going to run.

Somewhere in my search for coolers, one of them I looked at stated a 400mhz diference in the same cooler between a Palomino and a Tbred cpu. I wouldn't have thought that there was that much difference between 18 micron and 13 micron cpu's.

I did use the system with the Alpha cooler and did not have any instabilities show up.

If I ever get another older board, I'm going to make sure it can handle Tbred's.

Thanks for the input:)

Congratulations, Redbeard, 52°C under load is quite acceptable. A few people around here run higher than that. Now that Palomino will last for many years to come (though you should probably replace it, if you want to overclock!).:D
