what are artifacts?

Artifact is "junk," or a leftover. In the case of video, it is an improperly rendered area (like a green square in the middle of the screen).

In signal analysis, it's a glitch, or some non-signal anomaly.

Basically, it's something that is there that doesn't belong there (wherever "there" is).
