what are all these distributed stuff for?

Distributed computing is a way to share a task between several computers.

Normally big complex computer jobs are given to a big super-computer. Distributed computing is aimed at doing the same task, but by using a network of smaller computers.

RC5 is one such task. It is an attempt to decode an encrypted message encoded using the RC5 technique. There are other projects such as trying to find prime numbers, analysis of radioactive storage, AIDS research, etc.

For fun.🙂 I do it because I learn a TON along the way and because I like all the stats a little bit. HeHe. Actually, I'm addicted to stats. If I go too long without a stats fix, I start spazzing out.😀

Combine that with the competition and the all the kickass people that are on the team, and it's a great little hobby.

Yeah, Russ is an addict.

Currently there is no treatment program available other than the daily stats run 😉

I chose RC5 because the CPU's I was running at the time were better suited for that than any other contest at the time. Also because the info I read on Anand's site helped me pick out the components and build my 2nd - 7th systems.

I've gotten to know quite a few of the other addicts along the way. As someone once said, "What a long, strange trip it's been." 622 days and still going strong.

It might actually help your computer.

My work computer crashed a lot before I started RC5. Now it doesn't crash nearly as much. Maybe the constant CPU temp is a good thing for it.
