What antivirus for mac?

Until now I haven't run any anti virus software on my mac, thinking the risks are small and that I haven't had much to protect.

Now I'm going to start working on a patent and I really don't want it fucked up in any way. My brother got his computer breached and his business smashed to the point where he had to sell his apartment, and my friend was robbed of 6000 usd by a trojan. So, I have gotten kind of aware that things can go really bad...

So which one would you recommend? I was thinking about norton internet seq...

NOOOOOO

Whatever you do, don't install Norton.

In fact, if you are using OS X, there are no known, proven AV solutions out there since there are no known viruses out there for OS X. There are a couple of trojans, and some alleged exploits, but no viruses.

Don't go to any shady sites, all potential mac vulnerabilities require you to go to an obviously shady site. The same can be said of 95% of Windows issues. Just don't let the problem be between the chair and the keyboard.

i was wondering....how well is the firewall that comes with OS X? would other firewall solutions prove better than the bundled one with OS X?

The firewall is pretty good, and when used in conjunction with the firewall on your router, you should be solid.

Some like LittleSnitch (it broke a lot of things on my system, so I am not a fan) due to its ability to track and trap all the stuff... but honestly, it just gets annoying approving every little thing.

The new version of LittleSnitch is slightly easier to configure, and makes it easier to see which app specifically is being used and which port/server it wants to connect to. Makes approving based on server or application a breeze.

I was talking about the new version

Here is what it broke
Software Update (always said that my system was up to date)
Preview (nothing would actually open)
iPhoto (Could not import from my digital camera)
Random other small issues, none of which made sense. Oh yea, and it wouldn't uninstall.

There are the few solutions, such as Mcafee, norton, etc., but honestly you are better off with regular updates and a good firewall.

you can get clamXav on the cheap (donationware) and it works fine. i update it every so often, but i don't really run it from lack of need.
