On the way to work, there were wrecks everywhere:

Took us a while to get everything all cleaned up.

Then a while ago, I had to go shut down an off ramp because the CHP had shot someone:

Hopefully the rest of the evening will be uneventful.

An arraignment for the man who led California Highway Patrol officers on a chase along Highway 49 and into Grass Valley will be scheduled early next week.

William Ray Hennefer, 25, is being held without bail at the Nevada County jail on suspicion of charges including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, driving while under the influence of alcohol, and evading and resisting a peace officer.

Hennefer was apprehended only after he rammed five California Highway Patrol cars, was shot at by officers who feared for their lives and led authorities on a foot chase through the south end of town.

Hennefer?s court date hadn?t been set Thursday, District Attorney Cliff Newell said.

?I consider the guy a danger, just because of the facts involved in this particular arrest,? Newell said.

CHP officers were dispatched at 9:32 p.m. Wednesday for a report of a drunk driver northbound on Highway 49 north of Smith Road.

Officers attempted to stop Hennefer in his 1991 Buick Regal on the highway after he spun out of control, facing south in the northbound lane, said CHP Sgt. Dee Lavrador.

As officers approached, Hennefer drove away, allegedly striking two CHP vehicles, and headed in reverse on the off-ramp toward McKnight Way. Hennefer headed north on South Auburn Street, where the driver spun out of control and struck a vehicle, Lavrador said. He then accelerated toward an officer?s patrol vehicle, striking it.

Officers tried to force Hennefer to stop by attempting to drive his car off the road, Lavrador said.

Hennefer continued on McKnight Way and onto Taylorville Road, and lost control of his car at Freeman Lane and Mill Street, where he came to a stop, Lavrador said.

As a CHP officer tried to make contact with Hennefer, the suspect started his car and allegedly tried to run the officer over, Lavrador said. Two different officers fired their .40-caliber handguns at the suspect.

Hennefer allegedly rammed two more CHP cruisers, drove a quarter-mile, then left his vehicle near the intersection of Freeman and Mill streets, Lavrador said. CHP officers chased him to Mill and Rhode Island streets, apprehending him at 10 p.m. after a brief scuffle in which officers used Tasers to subdue him, Lavrador said.

During the incident, one Highway Patrol trooper was injured, but declined medical attention, Lavrador said.

Hennefer was taken to Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital before being booked into jail.

The Grass Valley Police Department is handling the criminal investigation, Lavrador said. Meanwhile, the Highway Patrol?s internal affairs unit is investigating the shooting. Lavrador did not release the names of the officers, who will be placed on desk duty while the investigation continues.

A crowd of onlookers gathered just before 10 p.m. Wednesday as CHP officers,

Grass Valley and Nevada City police and Nevada County Sheriff?s deputies convened on Mill Street near the highway onramp.

Local officers helped block portions of Mill Street during the investigation after the incident.

It always boggles my mind how people living in areas where it presumably gets cold as fuck, at least once a year, can turn driving home into such a clusterfuck.

My dad hasn't driven in snow for over 15 years. We were at Lake Tahoe, it was 0F, the road was iced over, and we managed not to die in a shitty rental Sienna with worn M/S tires and no chains.

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive...

I concur. I was driving an Accord to work and passing 4X4s that had no business being out in that weather.
