My wife and I are on vacation this week, staying at her parents' place in the wine country of BC. It's a warm night out, so we decided to sleep outside.

We're up high on a hill, overlooking the lake and the hills on the other side. The sky is perfectly clear, and we have a great view of the Milky Way and the Perseid meteor shower.

Across the lake, behind the hills, there is an awesome thunderstorm lighting up that part of the sky. It's odd that there are thick thunderclouds so close while the sky above us is clear.

And to top it all off, the International Space Station just passed by directly overhead.

Here's the winter view from their deck. (low res facebook photo)

Sounds grand. I don't remember what real night looks like. Everything's a perpetual dim glow from lights around here. I get major constellations, and a handful of stars. Hardly worth the effort.
