What AMD do I want?

Hey everybody,
I was just looking at newegg for a new processor when I realized that I CAN"T MAKE UP MY MIND! I am trying to decide which AMD 64 cpu I want to get for my new system. I want something that will stay fairly current and keep up with the latest games and programs for at least a year. Ok, that may be too much to ask, but it never hurts to try. I was looking at venice cores, maybe even a san deigo 3700 core if I feel like splurging. Help me make up my mind! BTW, x2's are out of my reach, right now anyway. I need a cpu NOW!

BTW, I am currently looking at getting a venice core 3500. However, I want to know if on-chip or onboard fsb would be better.

Go with the Venice 3000+ (~120) and OC the snot out of it.

San Diego cores are great (I like the 3700+) but you're talking nearly a 3x price premium over the Venice 3000+ ...

lol yea I cant decide either... well I've pretty much narrowed it down to the 3000+ or 3700+ if i were to buy today (various discounts at different retailers) but yea.. the 3700+ does cost like $130 more. But I kinda wanna splurge....

If you are going to overclock, make sure you get a good mobo and ram. I was stupid and didnt think about overclocking when I bought parts. I was only able to get a 150mhz overclock on my 3000+ winchester.

I'm going with the ABIT AN8-ULTRA motherboard but i'm not sure which CPU to get either. I was going to get the 3200+ Venice core but people say to save the extra $50 and get a 3000+ and OC it. Seems like a good idea but for some reason I keep wanting to get the 3200+

For non-OCers w/o price concerns: SD 3700+
For OCers w/o price concerns: SD 3700+
For hardcore OCers with price concerns: Venice 3000+
For less hardcore OCers with price concerns: Venice 3200+
For multitasking goodness w/o price concerns: Toledo 4400+
For multitasking goodness with price concerns: wait for the Manchester 3800+

I bought a Venice 3000+ (1.8 GHz) that o/c to 2.34 GHz. If I had it to do over, I would probably go for the Venice 3200+ since that gives you a 10x multiplier and is only $40 more in price.

Ok, I think that I have narrowed it down to the 3700 san diego or 3500 venice. However, what I want to know is what is the difference between the offboard fsb chips and the onboard fsb chips? Is there a big performance diffrence? I will be running an asus a8n-sli deluxe with kingston hyperX ddr433 dual channel and an nvidia 7800gtx, if this makes a difference...

Best thing for you is 3200+ Venice or 3500+ Venice. The 3000+ Venice is good, but you only get a 9x multiplier. With the 3200+ you get 10x and with the 3500+ you get 11x. It's quite helpful to have those extra multis.

Well, you can see how I've done with my 3000+ Venice below. With dividers now, I really don't understand why anyone cares about multipliers anymore. Get the cheapest chip and overclock it.

DFI Ultra D - 5/10 Bios
Venice 3000+ LBBLE 0515 FPDW - 2.7 GHz (9 x 300 - 5/6 divider) - 1.52 Volts
OCZ Rev2 PC3200 @ 250 FSB - TCC5 ( ) - 2.5-4-3-7
Gigagyte x800XL - passively cooled
xp-120 w/ Nexus fan (nice and cool!)
2 X 300 GB Seagate drives
400W Seasonic SuperSilencer w/ 22 A on the 12V line (who says you need a 480 W power supply!)
Antec 3000B case
2 DVD drives
Faster than my friend's FX-55, and deadly silent - love it!

The 3200+ is only a little more expensive than the 3000+, and the 10x multi is worth it.

If your mobo is a crappy OCer, then yes.

If you have a good mobo for OCing like the DFI Lanparty or Epox 9NPA+Ultra, the 3200+ is unecessary money spent.

Ok, I think I have decided on the venice core 3500, but I need to know if the integrated fsb is a better performer or not. thanx again.

If you are getting a new board. If you have an older board IE a Abit AV8, the higher multiplier would be nice.

Now I'm going to price out a DFI board... Though I'd need to get a new video card as I'm using an AGP 6800GT *cries*

MSI neo2 platinum, then you can use your agp card. And get the 3200 anyway IMO.

Fixed.

My friends 3000+ does 2.7ghz with ease on a NF3 250GB.

Im awaiting a new power supply and memory and ill be able to post my results.

As far as i know, if you have a mobo that can push 300x3 htt and run the 2:3 memory divider, youll have no trouble at all doing 2.7 on a current stepping venice.
