Why are you arbitrarily looking to go AMD? Intel's processors are currently faster clock-for-clock and also overclock way higher than AMD's offerings. FWIW, most AMD CPUs past the X2 4000+ would probably beat a Pentium D 3.2.

By price range do you mean what you paid for the system when you bought it, or what it's worth now?

It would help for you to be much more specific about how much money you're willing to spend and what you want to use the computer for. As Roguestar said, any new processor will be faster than what you have.

So you chose the Pentium D when AMD was the way to go and now you want to change to AMD when Intel is the way to go? :)

Going AMD for you makes no sense, you have a skt775 board and ddr2 ram. Pull that POS Pentium D, and slap an $80 E2180 in there and overclock it, and it will destroy anything AMD currently sells. If you don't want to overclock spend more and get an E6750 or an E8400 if you can find one.

If you have millions of $$ in AMD stocks.

If yourself or/and family members work for AMD and your livelihood depends on it (or any other similar circumstance), then by all means go AMD, after all you do not want to shoot yourself in the foot.

However you posted a question in a Technology Forum, so I would assume that your interests are in Technology.

So if your question is: "What AMD build will match, or beat my Intel rig within the same or lower price range?"

The answer is None.

The Basic Performance cost effective system is.

Abit IP-35-E, $60 after rebate - http://www.newegg.com/Product/...7031&Tpk=ABIT%2bIP35-E

Intel E2180, $80 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819116052

Crucial Ballistix 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2, $35 after rebate - http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16820146565

The Mobo has onboard Giga Network card.

Optionally as is with just raising the FSB this combo usually would OCed to 2.8 - 3.2 GHz.

Overclocked to 3GHz Run Triple Circles around any comparable AMD system.

$175 + Ship, with the potential for easy Upgrade to a Mean Gaming/Crunching computer if so desired.

The rest of the components is up to you and do not depend on whether you go AMD or Intel.

He can cut out the RAM and IP-35E since he has those... So yea, $80 swap for a C2D to replace the lousy Pentium.

If you are really serious about AMD, you could just get a 780G motherboard for $70-100 and a x2 4000 for about $60.

E2180 and 9600GT will cost you a little under $250. Clock it to 2.7-3.2GHz and it will destroy any AMD build for the same price.
