heh...first i thought "what's so special about that photo?"

It wasn't until I saw the 2nd link (saw 3rd and 1st first) that I realized they weren't pics :Q

Do you know if these are paintings that are copies of actual photos? Or did he paint these from imagination?

I can pencil that, easily. Coloring is different. I'm a newb to colors right now. (assuming I was given a photograph, of course!!).

Drawing and painting are two very different things. A friend of mine is a budding artist and he can draw amazing scenes with a pencil or pen, or cut out a beautiful stencil, but he bitches and moans about how tough painting is. Getting the colors and strokes right without fucking everything up is really hard. Even if the artist is copying from a photo, that's still really impressive.
