What am I missing?

I have been in the process of building a new system. I am currently running a Pentium 233 MMX with a Diamond Stealth 3D 3000 video card. In all my research I consistently read rave reviews of the latest and greatest $400 - $500 video cards. At the same time I read many people in the forums saying that "you can't tell the difference between 40 fps and 120 fps". I also hear people saying that if you're only using your PC for internet access, home finance use and basic office applications you really don't need a 1GHz system or even an 800MHz system, I've read in another Anandtech forum that a pentium 266MHz is adequate. Since from what I've read game play is much better on a game system why are people spending thousands of dollars on a super fast gaming system when they can go out and buy a Sony Playstation 2 (when they are readily available, that is) for $300? I am mostly interested in sports games and the reviews I have read give the PC versions only average ratings while the game system ratings are superb. I don't know if games like Quake are available for the game systems but if they are why don't we all save a bundle of cash and stop buying $500 video cards and pick up a game system and be done with it? This is post is not a pro game system cry or saying that making an investment in a kick ass gaming is unwise. I am really torn between which option to go with. I can spend a few hundred dollars to put together an adequate PC for my non-gaming computer needs and get a game system or invest the big bucks for a really great gaming PC. I guess being that I am only interested in sports games makes me a unique situation but any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Andrew
