What am I missing? Not that impressed with the 7800 GTX!

Now I'm basing my opinion on the below 3dmark05 score below:

7800 GTX 3DMark05

I was looking over that score and realized I'm not as impressed as I thought I was going to be.

For example, my system scores 6285 with 28.1 in GT1, 18.9 in GT2, and 29.9 in GT3. Now if you look at the GTX scores they're not much better then mine.

What gives? I was really looking forward to getting an A8N SLI Premium and one of these cards but now I'm having second thoughts.

So can anyone explain why I should still get the 7800 GTX?

Something similar was already posted, but

There's 2 possibilities here:

1. They haven't created sufficient drivers yet
2. The GTX isn't really all that good, and I won't be able to justify replacing my 6800GT until the 32 piped cards come out :D

3. If you were actually paying attention to some of the hints being dropped by people under NDA then you would be a bit more skeptical of these scores.

There are about a gazillion threads on this all over the internet already - I'm surprised people are still asking the same question over and over.

I guess we just need to wait and see what happens.

Those Mark05 scores probably don't come close to what the card can do in an actual game with eye candy up and 4x AA and 8x AF.

Supposedly 3DMark 2005 is written in a way that it doesn't take advantage of the capabilities of the G70. Supposedly games will though. I dunno... that's what people have been saying in other threads though.

I haven't been following any of it until now. It wasn't until the demo of BF2 came out that I realized I might need more power and started looking into the 7800 GTX.

Not everybody can sit on the web reading everything that everyone posts.

Thanks for the info.

No problem. Sorry about that little quip - I guess other people actually do work when they're at work instead of constantly forum hopping like me

I wasn't at first either but I think I've reset my expectations based on what some "in-the-know" people are suggesting. Next week should be fun. A lot of people are either going to be very surprised or very disappointed.

Well, this needs to be put into perspective. So, the 7800GTX apparently scores ~7800/13000 in a single/SLI config, respectively. What is about average for a stock 6800Ultra single/SLI? I know I could pull in around 5400 with my single 6800GT oc'ed to 400/1100. I would think that a jump from 5400 to 7800 in 3DMark05 would be fairly significant.

I realize that everyone is looking for 100% increase in every generation, but that is really quite unrealistic. Are we going to have cards with 128 pipes in 2 years? I doubt it... Get real. Do you think that SLI and CrossFire would even be something that nVidia and ATI would put out if they could double the speed each generation in a single card? IMO, When ATI indicated that they would develop CrossFire, it was clear that the next gen cards would not double the last generation's performance. This was pretty much proof that they had both hit a wall just like AMD and Intel, and were both going to have to move to some sort of dual solution to get the performance gains we were used to.

You make a good point. My 6800GT with the latest drivers gets 49xx at stock speeds. With enhanced driver support, the 7800 could probably get beyond 8000 at stock speeds, and that would be like a 70% increase...not bad.

Even more-so are their overclocks. So far an X.I.P from xs only managed 501 / 1307. No offense but from a card on .11nm thats pretty pathetic. I would expect atleast in the 550 range.

Hmm.. I'm probably not going to upgrade until we see some very good performing 24 pipelined cards or good 32 pipelined cards.

My guess is that you're missing actual reviews, not a crappy synthetic benchmark score. Fake or real.

And from your post we could assume that you're an ATi fanboi. What's your point?

did you read the second section of my post (the part where I said "not that I think thats the case") I was simply commenting that you were being ambiguous (something that is to expected since your under NDA), I'll buy whatever gives me the best bang for my buck and I'll have a go at either company if I feel its necessary

finally?!? :p

he's been saying this for day and days . . . post after post . . . short of waving a flag, he is doing as much of a service as he can . . . . i suspect [just me from what little i know and can read "into"] that the scores will be higher . . . [quite a bit higher]

i imagine some variant of the 7800 will score 7800 - but probably not their GTX faster card . . .

nVidia is spreading FUD and so is ATI - they are each trying to 'throw-off' their competitors . . .

it's only a few days . . . Tues, i think . . . patience . . . everyone will know soon enough

my prediction: the 7800GTX will score a bit lower than sli'd 6800ultras so they can still sell the old cards ;)
[plus the GTX should O/C]

Yes, you're right, of course he has been ;)

Can't wait to see what that sucker will do. Get me the $400 one and I'm ready for COD2 with all the eye candy.
