What am I missing by not upgrading my Dell 2001FP?

I've had a pair of Dell 2001FPs for about 6 years now and loved them. One of them gave out last week, and I'm not really sure where to go from here. I could just spend $100 on ebay and get another 2001FP, which seems like a reasonable option. I could also buy a new monitor, but I don't know how well it'll work with the monitor I still have. Plus if the new monitor is way better I'll probably gravitate away from my old one (and be compelled to buy another). So my question is basically this: are newer monitors, in terms of color quality/response/different aspect ratios, etc, so much better that it'd be silly for me to buy another 2001FP, even if I was only willing to spend maybe $200 on the new monitor?

Possibly useful usage notes: I'd say my usage is 60% internet/office, 35% gaming (no FPS), 5% TV (no movies).

I think it's quite reasonable nowadays to have a 16:9 or 16:10 display. You could get a reasonably nice monitor relatively cheap, e.g., Dell U2311H 23" H-IPS. Admittedly, I have little idea about the cost in the US but if it costs significantly more than $200 then I'm sure you could get a U2211H instead.

I certainly wouldn't buy a used monitor. One just died on you.
