My friend has a problem his computer just started using 3gb out of a total 4gb RAM and 25% CPU while sat at idle. No programs are running and task manager shows nothing using anywhere like this amount of resources. It usually sits at 1-2gb ram and >5% CPU. Here are a few things i have checked...

* No new programs have been added
*AVG free and spybot have been run and come up clear
*AVG, spybot, defrag are all on manual updates and scans

Anything else i should be looking for? Running windows 7 64 ultimate BTW

The RAM could probably be explained by the prefetching that Windows does. It loads commonly used stuff into RAM so it is ready faster. The RAM used by the prefetch is still available though if another program needs it.

I am aware of this, it used to idle at 1-1.5 gb used now it idles at 3-3.5gb this isnt normal and im sure it isnt windows prefetch.

Open the task manager then and show the column "total memory "private working set"" under the processes tab to see what's using the memory. You can also show CPU time, which could give you an idea of what might be using the processor.
