What all is involved with being a volunteer firefighter?

mugs

Lifer
What kind of time commitment (per week)? Do you have to pay for your own equipment (those fire suits they wear) or anything? What kind of training do you have to go through? What are the physical requirements? I'm thinking seriously about volunteering, but I'd like to know what I'm getting myself into before I go down there.

having a radio w/ you at all times and being a slave to when they call for you.... kinda like a doctor being on call.

I hope your house burns down.

Likewise.

Gee thanks Drew. See, I was being ironic - he insulted all volunteer firefighters by calling them hicks, but I'm sure he would appreciate them if his house was on fire. I didn't ask for either of you to crap in my thread, I just asked an honest question. Pardon me.

Edit: whoops, misdirected my angst at Drew. Misunderstood what he said. 🙂

Are you thinking of doing this to get the feel for professional firefighting. If so you might want to talk to a firechief in your area first. Good friend of mine in my hometown was a firechief and he actually said that was a bad idea since the majority of the volunteer firefighters were improperly trained and had extremely bad habbits, thus when they were hiring they actually perfered fresh recruits to send through proper training and school. Just a bit of advice.

Edit: Otherwise if you are just doing it for service of the community, go for it. It is truly a good service to provide.

No, I don't want to be a professional firefighter. I just finished college, I'm underemployed, and I want to do something that is fulfilling and meaningful with my life right now. From what I've already learned though, I'd have to go through a 14-week training course through the county fire academy and additional training is available but optional.

Sorry to you too.

I have many friends who are volunteer firefighters. Some of them are my relatives. Because I grew up in an area where people are typically called hicks, I took offense to it.

And yes, I'm sure he would appreciate them if his house was on fire. Even though he might have offended me, I would still respond to the fire if I was one of the firefighters on duty. And I didn't mean to crap on your thread. Pardon ME!

As far as I know for the company in my town, there are certain tests you have to take, and a probationary period to go through, but I know all of your equipment is provided.

Woah, sorry Drew. I thought you were saying that you wanted my house to burn down. 🙂

Why don't you just go to the firehouse and talk to whoever's in charge?

I plan on it, I just wanted to see what I was getting myself into before I went down there. I noticed as I was driving home the other day that the town next to mine is looking for volunteer firefighters. That's something that's been in the back of my mind for a while, so I'm thinking seriously about doing it. My three uncles were all volunteer firefighters when I was a kid - I guess you could call them hicks (it doesn't help that two moved to Alabama and one to Virginia). I talked to a firefighter I know today, but I forgot to ask him most of the questions I had.

What's the matter? Your local department turn you down because you are an ignorant ass?

I'm just telling it how it is. All volunteer firefighters around here are hicks. Nothin wrong with that.

You have to go through the exact same thing as normal firefighters. Equipment is usually paid for through local events and fundraisers. In an area with a lot of community involvement, you'll find yourself better equipped than your paid counterparts.

It depends on your FD's budget, if they have the money they will supply the gear and training. I suggest you go down to the local FD station and talk to them about it, most of them would be happy to talk to you about it.

Good luck, it's a great thing to do.

Do you think maybe that's because you live in KANSAS? 🙂
