What airlines have a discount for people flying to a sudden funeral?

Myself, mom and sister need to fly like today or tomm for a funeral. Wow it's going to run something like $1250 to fly from Orange County to El Paso. Are there any airlines that nowadays offer a reduced rate for such things?

Check out priceline - for really short notice stuff like this you can sometimes get very good deals. I flew from Colorado to PA for about $140 on one days notice in a similar situation (ussually costs about $350

what m4h said, i think you have to fax a death certificate though. I was 11 when my grandfather died and remember something of the sort having to be done.

i tried this when i was a sophomore in college. my high school principal, of whom i had much respect for and had a good relationship with, suddenly passed away. i worked pretty damn hard to get tickets for his funeral, but every airline i tried to contact wasn't planning on going under $1000 unless i was a close relative.

Yep, it has to be a close relative

And even at that, from what I've heard the bereavement fares aren't all that good. Though better then buying it straight retail with one days notice.

well another option is just to drive it, it's only a 12hr drive and it would be alot cheaper.

thats true...they aren't as good of a deal as they are made out to be, and you have to pay full fare upfront and get a refund

When I was looking for such a fare, it was still quite expensive compared to what I would pay if I had bought tickets 28+ days in advance. Ugh...

In my case it was cheaper to drive my family from Jacksonville to Orlando for a flight to Cadillac Michigan. All the bereavement flights were more expensive than shopping around at the usual suspects.

yeah may drive as the rate isn't some big discount. And I won't have to worry about going to the restroom with guys in handcuffs. Maybe I'll run into someone at the airport that owes me money though. LOL George

They certainly do. But... If you call the airline asking for this, versus call the airline asking for a normal fare, you are more than likely to find the bereavement fare to be higher.

Yep. For me it was half price which was still a lot of money.

It might be worth checking ebay and buying a few Southwest rapid reward vouchers, they usually sell for around 250 for a roundtrip.

Flying out of Ontario or Long Beach might be cheaper.

Ontario is an excellent airport.

What the? I am at a lost for words. OF COURSE if you bought it a month in advance, it'd be cheaper!

My guess is he wanted to fly from Jacksonville to Michigan, but found that it was cheaper to drive to Orlando, then fly from there to Michigan.
