Stupid question but I picked up a compaq deskpro en (pentium ii version) a few days ago and installed linux but it comes with a lousy 4Meg ATI 3D Rage Pro in it's agp slot which is a half height NLX? slot and my NVidia card is too big :-( and i had to use XFree86 3.3.6 when i was working with 4.0.3 so does anyone know of a decent agp card that will fit in the deskpro? with 8 or 16meg?

thnx & bst rgrds

If I'm not mistaken, the ATI card and video memory are on the motherboard. What you are seeing is a backplane card which should have a mix of ISA and PCI slots on it. There is no AGP slot. That is one of the reasons why Compaqs are not good upgrade candidates. PCI card is the best you will be able to do....that's if the bios will allow you to disable the onboard and use it.

Shatter, welcome to the Forums.

Ati usually cuts down on their cards to save on pcb materials, but if Compuwiz1 is correct, then you will need to go pci. If in fact it has an agp slot you could replace it with another Ati card that is similar in build. Newegg has photo's of most of the cards they offer, and you could take a look there.

compuw.

yeah it does have an agp slot but as i'm not really that interested in games and really need to use XFree 4.0+ so i'll probably go the pci route -- but it just annoys me that ppl do such stupid things when designing computer's :-( oh well -- any reccommendations about a decent pci videocards??
