what advantages to update to W10 from W7 ultimate?

I would have stayed with XP if it wasnt for the lack of ssd support with xp. I love XPmore than 7 no question but had no choice. I had w7 installed on an HDD and did not see any improvement till I installed the 840 EVO.

now my question is for W10 vs W7
what REAL benefits is there for moving from W7 to 10?
maybe slightly faster? I dont think id notice it.

I have a feeling ill be sitting with W7 for a long time.

whats the expiration for support with 7?
I never donwloaded patches for XP so patches for 7 is the same.
im trying to understand what I would benefit from.

that UI is hideous though.

Win10 brings a lot of new features, you'll have to wait until RTM for exactly what but things like DX12 for gaming, improved security, OS that handles all types of hardware etc, very long support especially compared to Win7,I would also expect speed improvements once it goes final and companies get drivers out the door as well.

End of the day you get the chance to upgrade for free(if you have 7/8/8.1) so that is really a bonus.

I have to say something regarding gaming. I havent played for a long time actually. last time was aorund 2009 with batman arkham asylum and gta4 I recently bought batman origins and all I can say is what a ripoff the gaming industry is. with 5 years after and the game looks no better than the one from 2009. In fact I think the origins is garbage in every way. ive upgraded my GPU from 9800GTX to the gtx 660 and this is a ripoff as well. upgrading for nothing. we pay more for nothing more.

so for me, I see no reason moving to W10 from 7. I upgraded to to the 7 only because I HAD to for ssd support but otherwise I think im going to hold off to at LEAST 2020.

I always upgrade,Win10 I will be getting for sure, ironically if I did not game then would be on Linux full time, since there is a lot of great Linux distros out there.

As I stated end of the day Win10 is a free upgrade for 7 and above so you don't really lose only win.

I think Win10 is a worthwhile upgrade from Win7,8. I have been using the preview version and really like it. Though I liked Win8 and purchase the pro version for $50 bucks. When I heard that it would be a free upgrade that made it even more attractive.
I'm not a gamer and use Zorin Linux about 50 percent of the time.
At age 75 staying up to date keeps my mind energized.

7 is obsolete. It expired from mainstream support last month and is on extended support only. Its also 5yrs old and increasingly creaky. 10 has a new WDDM, new driver model, native USB 3 support and a rejigged kernel for improved security and speed. And 10 is free in the first year.

There has been a question put forth about the OEM copies used by those illustrious PC builders known as DIY'ers. Some think M$ will not be so inclined to include them in this deal.

If you don't install any Windows updates, you don't need to care about the end of life date. Unless you are worried about having to pay for customer support, which is now the case since two weeks ago. Use Windows 7 until computer architectures evolve to a point when it won't run anymore, it doesn't make a difference if you're not worried about security fixes.

Also, you didn't have to upgrade to Windows 7. Vista has the same SSD capabilities.

One can direct upgrade from XP to Vista, and then from Vista to 7. Been there - done that!

If you have a touch screen, 8/8.1/10 is for you. If you have a tablet with the Windows OS, and you want your desktop to look the same, 8/8.1/10 is you. If you want to continue to do what you do now without interruption, 7 will continue to be for you for a while.

Where did you see that you can upgrade from Win 7 for free? and when they get a ready version of 10?

Delivering Windows as a Service and a Free Upgrade to Windows 10

Today was a monumental day for us on the Windows team because we shared our desire to redefine the relationship we have with you – our customers. We announced that a free upgrade for Windows 10 will be made available to customers running Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows Phone 8.1 who upgrade in the first year after launch.*

As to when?....When it's ready probably towards October my best guess for final RTM build.

Even with SSD support I can't imagine why you'd want to stick with XP. Especially unpatched. (wtf!?)

This sounds just like you're sticking with XP because of how popular it was to hate on Windows 7 when it launched. Why not look at this from the opposite side. Why are you so determined to stick with old software? Assuming variables like price are not a factor, what are you gaining by not upgrading?

Note: Just like XP, in windows 7/8 the UI can be changed and modified.

Not sure if Windows 10 will have Windows Media Center, but Windows 7 does. And it is something I use often, especially on my HTCP.

Kodi runs on XP, Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 and is much better than WMC imho.

I've never understood the love for WMC...it was slow and not that well made, honestly...

Maybe in 2005 with a 360 is was great...but it ran slow as hell on the 360.
